Medi-Cal eye exams & glasses in Oakland
We accept Medi-Cal
Fruitvale Optometry is a Medi-Cal provider right next to the Fruitvale BART station, open 7 days a week. If you have Medi-Cal (including plans through Alameda Alliance for Health), you may be covered for a complete eye exam and a pair of glasses — with no copay. Here's how it works.
What Medi-Cal covers for your eyes
- Eye exams. A routine, complete eye exam is a covered Medi-Cal benefit.
- Glasses. Eyeglasses are a covered benefit — California restored adult eyeglass coverage in 2020, and children have always been covered.
- Children & youth (under 21). Full vision coverage, including exams and glasses, under Medi-Cal's children's benefits.
- Medical eye care. Care for conditions like glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, and eye injuries is also covered.
Exact benefits and frame/lens options depend on your specific plan and eligibility. Call (510) 533-6567 and we'll confirm your coverage before you come in — in English or Spanish.
How often can I get an exam and new glasses?
Adults on Medi-Cal generally qualify for a new eye exam and glasses about every 24 months; children may qualify more often. We check your current eligibility when you book, so you'll know before your visit.
What to bring
- Your Medi-Cal Benefits Identification Card (BIC) or plan card (Alameda Alliance, etc.)
- A photo ID
- Your current glasses or contact-lens boxes, if you have them
